When the weather turns chilly and you’re craving something warm and comforting, nothing beats a bowl of creamy potato soup. This recipe comes straight from traditional German kitchens, where hearty flavours and simple ingredients make every spoonful feel like a hug from grandma.
Our Grandma’s Classic Potato Soup is made with tender potatoes, celeriac, and leek, simmered until soft and then blended into a velvety soup. The touch of lemon juice brightens the flavour, while a swirl of cream gives it that irresistible richness. Topped with toasted rye bread, golden fried onions, and fresh chives, it’s the perfect rustic dish to gather around the table with family.
This soup is not only delicious, but also versatile. You can enjoy it as a starter, serve it as a main course with extra bread, or add your own twist by including more vegetables or even crispy bacon, just like grandma used to do. It’s comfort food at its best!

Grandma’s Classic Potato Soup
Ingredients
Method
- Peel the potatoes and celeriac, wash and cut into small cubes. Clean the leek, slice lengthwise, wash, and cut into thin rings. Rinse the marjoram, shake dry, pluck the leaves and chop finely.
- Place the prepared vegetables into a soup pot, add the stock cube and 1 litre of water. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently for about 20 minutes until the potatoes and vegetables are soft.
- Meanwhile, heat 2 tbsp butter in a frying pan. Toast the slices of rye bread on both sides until golden brown. Remove and cut in half. Place in soup bowls.
- Peel the onion and slice into rings. Heat the remaining butter in the same pan and fry the onion rings until golden brown, stirring occasionally.
- Purée the soup with a hand blender until smooth. Stir in the lemon juice and cream. Season generously with salt and pepper.
- To serve, ladle the soup over the toasted bread in the bowls. Top with fried onion rings and sprinkle with chopped chives.
